Scientific knowledge to address biological invasions in protected areas
SIGEEI brings together species, occurrence records, impact assessments, priorities, and management actions in a public platform dedicated to conserving Brazilian biodiversity.
An open knowledge and management-support infrastructure
The Management System for Invasive Alien Species and Biological Invasions in Protected Areas supports the detection, recording, assessment, prioritization, control, and monitoring of biological invasions within and around protected areas.
Public information can be consulted without registration. Managers, specialists, and administrators sign in to the new platform to review evidence, record local status, and preserve an auditable history of decisions.
Public accessOpen knowledge with no registration required.
National coverageProtected areas throughout Brazil.
Versioned dataSources, authorship, and changes are preserved.
Auditable decisionsScientific evidence remains separate from local interpretation.
Science applied to management
A national challenge, evidence-informed decisions
SIGEEI transforms inventories, georeferenced records, impact assessments, and local knowledge into distinct decision layers. Every result explicitly retains its scale, source, and limitations.
Brazilian overview
The diversity of invasions requires integrated, continuously updated information
A harmonized national review recorded 444 invasive alien species in Brazil: 254 animals, 188 plants, and two algae across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environments.
The synthesis showed that 20% of first records occurred after 2000, reinforcing the need for a living infrastructure rather than static lists.
Monitoring does not mean assigning the same status to every species
The catalogue brings together species confirmed as invasive in Brazil and species relevant to prevention, distinguishing national status from recognition within a protected area.
National status
Confirmed invasive in Brazil
Recognized as invasive in the country based on versioned scientific sources.
Prevention
Potentially invasive; absent from Brazil
Invasive elsewhere and relevant to introduction surveillance.
Contained status
Cultivation, captivity, or contained condition
Present under containment, without confirmation of a free-living population.
Official local scale
Confirmed invasive in a federal protected area
A species–protected area relationship recognized by ICMBio, without automatically changing national status.
From evidence to management products
Traceable data gain context before informing decisions
SIGEEI preserves the origin of records, applies explicit quality criteria, and offers different spatial perspectives.
01
Compile and qualify
GBIF data, consolidated records, and manual entries remain identified by source, licence, and quality.
Taxonomy, occurrences, sources, and distribution across protected areas.
02
Assess
EICAT assessments and local status as distinct scientific levels.
03
Prioritize
Priorities for management, prevention, and early detection.
04
Act and monitor
Management, monitoring, reports, and versioned decisions.
Alignment with official references
ICMBio documents and methods integrated into SIGEEI
The platform incorporates the list recognized by ICMBio Ordinance No. 510/2025 and reproduces the criteria of the federal prioritization tool while retaining the provenance of every item of information.
The renewal preserves accumulated knowledge while expanding scientific integration and governance.
